How fast does hair grow? It is one of the most common questions we hear – from men planning a hair transplant and from patients who recently had FUE. Understanding the hair cycle and normal hair growth makes it easier to set realistic expectations.
This guide covers how much hair grows per week, month and year, what happens after transplantation – including shock loss – and how to support faster regrowth under controlled conditions.
How fast does hair grow on the scalp?
On average scalp hair grows about 1.0 cm per month, 12–15 cm per year and 2.3 mm per week (~0.3 mm per day).

Growth varies with genetics, age, ethnicity, diet, sleep, stress and health. It is usually fastest between 15 and 30 and slows somewhat after 40.
The four phases of the hair cycle

After hair transplantation, transplanted follicles often shift from the growth phase to a resting phase. That biological response explains shock loss – when hair shafts shed before new growth becomes visible.
Timeline after FUE – three healing phases
After FUE hair transplantation in Stockholm, regrowth does not follow the same pace as normal hair growth. Below is a phase-based overview – from acute healing to a mature final result.

Shock loss – what happens in the scalp after surgery
With FUE, individual grafts are moved from the donor area – usually the back of the head – to thinning or bald zones. During extraction and implantation, follicles experience temporary oxygen shortage and mechanical stress. That is a natural response to surgery, not a sign that something has gone wrong.
During the first three months, many patients lose their transplanted hair shafts. This is called shock loss and indicates that follicles have entered a resting phase before real regrowth begins. Shafts may shed as early as 2–5 weeks, but the follicles remain under the skin and prepare to produce new hair once blood supply is restored.
It can feel like a setback when the scalp looks thinner than right after the procedure. In practice, the body pauses growth briefly – before new hairs break through, typically from month 3 onwards.
Factors affecting growth rate
- Genetics and age – transplanted hair keeps donor characteristics; metabolism slows after 40
- Ethnic differences – Loussouarn et al. (2016): Asian hair fastest (~7.6 cm/6 months), afro-textured slowest (~4.9 cm/6 months)
- Recipient site blood supply – crown often slower than hairline
- Lifestyle – protein and micronutrients needed; chronic stress raises cortisol; smoking reduces graft survival (Aköz et al., 2002)
How to support faster hair growth
Finasteride
Finasteride lowers DHT and may help protect non-transplanted follicles in androgenetic alopecia; it should be discussed medically based on diagnosis, risk profile and treatment goals.
PRP treatment
PRP releases VEGF and PDGF, supporting angiogenesis and the anagen phase. Research (Garg, 2016; Aldor et al., 2023) suggests PRP supports graft survival and density in some patients.
