What is androgenetic alopecia?

Androgenetic alopecia is the most common form of hair loss. It is hereditary and linked to genes and hormones, especially dihydrotestosterone (DHT).

In men it often starts at the temples or crown. In women it more often appears as diffuse thinning across the scalp.

Causes and symptoms of androgenetic alopecia

Common causes include:

  • Genetic sensitivity to DHT (dihydrotestosterone)
  • Hormonal influence that makes hair follicles more sensitive
  • Progressive miniaturization of the hair follicles over time
  • Shorter growth phase and longer resting phase

Common symptoms include thinner hair, a more visible scalp, and in men an M-shaped hairline.

Treatment of androgenetic alopecia

There are several treatment options:

Medical treatments

Minoxidil and finasteride can slow hair loss and sometimes stimulate new growth.

Hair transplantation

A permanent solution where follicles are moved to areas affected by hair loss.

PRP treatment

PRP can stimulate hair growth and improve the hair follicle environment.

Combination treatment

Several treatments together often give the best result.
