Our Process
How a hair transplant works, step by step
With FUE technology, an advanced method of hair transplantation, hair follicles can be effectively transferred from dense areas at the back of the head to sparser areas without damaging the scalp tissue.
Natural appearance
The technique is used to give hair a natural appearance and is performed under local anesthesia, making the treatment painless for the patient.
No overnight stay
The procedure does not require an overnight stay, so the patient can return home on the same day as the procedure is performed.
Important to know:Medical treatments such as minoxidil and finasteride can slow hair loss and, in some cases, promote some regrowth. However, they are not a substitute for hair transplantation, especially in cases where hair follicles have already been lost.
Consultation
During your first consultation visit at Akacia Medical, you will meet with a coordinator. During the visit, you will fill out a form in which you describe:
- Your health status and any previous operations or illnesses
- Indicate if you are taking any medications and what they are
- Description of your symptoms
- When your hair loss began
- If there is a family history of hair loss
The coordinator will also take photographs as part of the assessment. Our doctor will conduct an examination to determine whether you are a suitable candidate for a hair transplant.
This includes an assessment of the type of hair loss you have and how many hair follicles are needed to achieve the desired result. During the consultation, you will also receive information about the procedure, including cost, time required, and waiting time.

On the day of surgery
When you arrive at Akacia Medical on the day of your surgery, you will be welcomed by our team. They will:
- Review how the hair transplant will be performed
- You will be required to complete a health declaration form.
- We take a blood sample to check for infectious diseases such as hepatitis and HIV.
- Mark the planned hairline
- Take new photographs as part of the documentation prior to the procedure.

The operation
During the actual transplantation of the hair follicles, the procedure is performed under local anesthesia. If necessary, you can be given sedatives to help you feel more relaxed.
Preparation:
- We shave both the donor area and the recipient area.
- We thoroughly clean and sterilize your head
The process:
- The hair follicles are carefully removed one by one with a punch. The size of the punch depends on your hair type.
- Inspection under a microscope for quality control
- Additional local anesthesia in the recipient area
- The grafts are placed in channels made by the surgeon.
Local anesthesia is used for a pain-free experience.
Time required: A large hair transplant involving around 2,500-3,500 hair follicles usually takes around 7-8 hours.
During the operation, you as a patient will have a 20-minute break to eat lunch. When half of the operation has been completed, we will serve you lunch. When the operation is complete, we will apply a bandage over the donation area.

After the operation
The newly transplanted area is very sensitive, and we will go through your aftercare instructions with you in detail.
First 10 days – Important to avoid:
- Touching the transplanted area with your fingers
- Head covering or covering the head with something
- Heavy lifting and physical exertion
For helmet use, you will need to wait 3-4 weeks.
After day 10:
You can start washing your whole head as usual again.
You will remain in contact with Akacia Medical even after the operation until an evaluation has been made. Ongoing contact is important to us, and we would like you to send us photos throughout the entire process.
Results: The final result of the transplant will be visible after 12 months. Read more about aftercare.
