Telogen Effluvium

Temporary hair loss that often occurs after stress, illness, or major life changes. Learn more about causes and treatment.

What is telogen effluvium?

Telogen effluvium is a form of temporary hair loss in which a larger proportion of the hair enters the resting phase (the telogen phase) at the same time. This leads to diffuse hair loss across the entire scalp, unlike pattern hair loss which follows a specific pattern.

The condition is usually reversible, and the hair starts growing back when the underlying cause is treated or disappears.

Common causes of telogen effluvium

  • Major stress or traumatic events
  • Severe illness or surgery
  • Hormonal changes (for example after pregnancy)
  • Deficiency of certain nutrients
  • Side effects of medications
  • Rapid weight change

Treatment

In most cases the hair recovers on its own when the underlying cause is treated. Treatment may include:

  • Identifying and treating the underlying cause
  • Improving diet and nutrient intake
  • Stress management and lifestyle changes
  • PRP treatment to stimulate hair growth
