Hair Transplant with the DHI Method

DHI is a workflow where follicles are implanted directly during placement. At Akacia Medical we offer a DHI-like variant where, in selected cases, we can avoid shaving the recipient area. The procedure is more complex and takes longer, but the goal and final result are the same as with FUE: a natural and well-planned outcome.

What is DHI?

DHI stands for Direct Hair Implantation and is a workflow where follicles are placed directly into the recipient area using a dedicated implantation tool, often called a Choi Pen. The technique is often used when you want to work with a high level of precision in placement, direction and density.

It is important to distinguish between a method name and actual quality. DHI is not automatically better than FUE. The result depends greatly on how the hairline, angle, density and graft handling are planned and performed.

At Akacia Medical we offer a DHI-like treatment where, in some cases, we can avoid shaving the recipient area. If you want to read more about our FUE method or compare with real patient cases, you can also see our results.

How does our DHI-like treatment work?

1. Consultation and planning

First we assess the hair loss, donor area and your goals. This is also where we decide whether a DHI-like treatment without shaving the recipient area is suitable, or whether FUE is the better option.

2. Graft extraction

The follicles are extracted gently from the donor area. The goal is to preserve the donor area well while ensuring that the grafts maintain high quality before implantation.

3. Precise placement

The key strength of DHI-like methods is the controlled placement of each graft. Direction, angle and density are planned carefully to create a natural overall impression, even when working without shaving the recipient area.

4. Aftercare and follow-up

After the procedure you receive clear instructions and follow-up. You are welcome to read more about our aftercare.

When can a DHI-like treatment be the right choice?

Possibility to avoid shaving

In selected cases the method can be used when you want to avoid shaving the recipient area, something some patients see as a clear advantage.

Precise placement

The method makes it possible to work carefully with direction and angle, which is crucial for a natural result.

Suitable for selected areas

A DHI-like treatment can be a good option in smaller or more defined areas where you want a high degree of control.

The same goal as FUE

The goal is not a better result than FUE, but an equivalent and natural final result achieved through a different implantation workflow.

Who is DHI suitable for?

DHI-like treatments may suit people who want to improve the hairline or density in defined areas, who have a sufficiently strong donor area, and where there is value in avoiding shaving the recipient area.

What matters most is not the method name, but whether the treatment is adapted to your hair type, the progression of your hair loss and your long-term goals.

When is DHI less suitable?

If the hair loss is very diffuse, if the donor area is too weak, or if the cause of the hair loss has not been sufficiently assessed, other approaches may be more suitable. DHI is also less suitable when larger areas need to be covered, because fewer grafts can usually be transplanted and therefore less area can be covered. In many cases, FUE is also a more efficient choice because the procedure is less complex and takes less time.

That is why the consultation is crucial. We never recommend a method unless we believe it fits your situation.

Recovery and aftercare

Regardless of method, the period after the procedure is important for the final result. You receive clear instructions on washing, activity, healing and what to avoid during the first days and weeks.

When will the result be visible?

The first clear signs of new growth are usually visible after 3–6 months. More substantial density is often seen after 6–12 months, and the final result is normally assessed after around 12 months.

A natural final result depends on choosing the right method and planning the treatment carefully from the start.

DHI at Akacia Medical

Many patients look into DHI when they want to understand the difference between implantation methods. At Akacia Medical we offer a DHI-like treatment in selected cases, mainly when the goal is to avoid shaving the recipient area. The procedure is more complex and takes longer, but the final result should be just as natural and well planned as with FUE.
